Post-Partum Anxiety- How Chiropractic Can Help

By Dr. Megan Ayala | Empower Spine & Body | Powdersville, SC

You're holding your baby and your mind is racing through every worst-case scenario. You feel like you're failing even when everyone tells you you're doing great. You can't turn your brain off long enough to actually rest, even when the baby is finally asleep. And somewhere underneath all of it is this quiet, terrifying thought: what is wrong with me?

I want you to hear this from me, woman to woman, before you hear it from anyone else: nothing is wrong with who you are. Something is happening in your nervous system — and it has a name, a cause, and a path forward.

You're Not Lazy. You're Not Dramatic. Your Nervous System Is Stuck.

Postpartum anxiety and the dysregulation that comes with it are not character flaws. They are not signs of weakness or failure. They are the predictable result of a nervous system that went through the single most demanding physiological event a human body can endure — and never got the support it needed to come back down out of survival mode.

Here's what's actually happening in your body. During labor and delivery, your sympathetic nervous system — fight or flight — was activated at the highest level it will likely ever experience. That's by design. It's protective. It's necessary. But your body expects that activation to be followed by a period of deep parasympathetic recovery — rest, safety, nervous system downregulation.

Most postpartum women never get that. Instead they go straight into round-the-clock newborn care, sleep deprivation, hormonal free-fall, and an entirely new identity — all while their nervous system is still revving from delivery. The fight-or-flight state doesn't turn off. It just becomes your new normal. And it gets labeled "mom anxiety" like that's supposed to be acceptable.

It's not. That's not normal. That's not fine.

The Vagus Nerve Connection Nobody Talks About

Your vagus nerve is the primary regulator of your parasympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for calm, digestion, connection, and recovery. It runs from your brainstem, through your neck, down through your diaphragm, into your gut.

When the upper cervical spine is misaligned — which happens frequently during labor and delivery, especially with extended pushing, interventions, or a fast or traumatic birth — vagal nerve function can be directly impacted. A nervous system that can't access its own "off switch" stays activated. Stays anxious. Stays exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't touch.

This is why postpartum chiropractic care isn't a luxury. It's foundational. Correcting cervical and sacral misalignment after birth isn't just about your back pain — it's about giving your vagus nerve and your entire parasympathetic system the structural support to actually come back online.

What Your Nervous System Actually Needs Right Now

I'm not going to tell you to "just rest" — you have a newborn, I know that's not realistic. Here's what actually moves the needle:

Postpartum chiropractic care to restore alignment in the cervical spine and pelvis, supporting vagal tone and parasympathetic recovery.

Co-regulation — your nervous system calms in connection with another calm nervous system. Skin-to-skin contact, a hand on your chest while you breathe, a friend who sits with you without trying to fix anything.

Extended exhales. Longer exhale than inhale tells your vagus nerve you are safe. Do this for two minutes, several times a day. It's not magic. It's neurology.

Naming what's happening out loud — to your partner, your doctor, your chiropractor, your friend. A nervous system stuck in survival mode gets worse in isolation and better in connection.

You're Allowed to Need Help With This

I see you. The one who holds everything together while quietly falling apart. You don't have to perform "fine" for anyone — not your mother-in-law, not the pediatrician, not Instagram.

If what I'm describing sounds like more than your nervous system needing support — if you're having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, or if the anxiety feels unmanageable — please reach out to your OB, a perinatal mental health provider, or the Postpartum Support International helpline at 1-800-944-4773. You deserve real support, and there is no shame in needing it.

For the nervous system dysregulation that so many postpartum moms carry quietly — that's exactly what we're here for.
