Your Body Isn't Broken — It's Pregnant and Dysregulated. Here's the Difference.
By Dr. Megan Ayala | Empower Spine & Body | Powdersville, SC
You're exhausted in a way sleep doesn't fix. Your heart races for no reason. You snap at your husband over something small, then cry about it twenty minutes later. You've started wondering if something is actually wrong with you — or if this is just what pregnancy is supposed to feel like.
I need you to hear this clearly: you're not falling apart. Your nervous system is working overtime to keep up with a body that is rebuilding itself from the inside out — and nobody told you what that actually feels like.
I'm Dr. Megan. I'm a chiropractor, a nervous system specialist, and a mom who has lived every version of what I'm about to explain to you. As a crunchy mom and a chiropractor, I'll tell you what the internet won't. 🌿
Your Nervous System Is Doing the Hardest Work of Your Life Right Now
Pregnancy is not just a hormonal event. It is a full-system renovation — and your autonomic nervous system, the part of you running in the background managing your heart rate, digestion, blood pressure, and stress response, is working harder than it ever has.
Here's what's actually happening in your body. Your blood volume is increasing by up to 50%. Your relaxin levels are rising, loosening every ligament in your body — including the ones stabilizing your spine and pelvis. Your sympathetic nervous system, the fight-or-flight side, is more reactive than your baseline because your body is on high alert protecting the life growing inside you.
That's not anxiety. That's not you being dramatic. That's your nervous system responding exactly the way it's designed to respond to the biggest physiological event of your life.
Why Your Spine and Your Nervous System Are the Same Conversation
Your spine houses your spinal cord — the direct line between your brain and every system in your body, including the autonomic functions regulating your stress response. When your spine is misaligned, especially in the upper cervical and sacral regions, it creates interference in that communication line. Your nervous system, already working overtime during pregnancy, now has to work through static.
This is where Webster Technique care comes in. It's not just about getting your baby in a good position for birth — though it does support that. It's about removing interference from your nervous system during the exact season when your nervous system needs to function at its absolute best.
When I adjust a pregnant mom's sacrum and pelvis, I'm not just working on her structure. I'm working on the communication line that's regulating her entire physiology — and her baby's environment.
What Nervous System Regulation Actually Looks Like in Pregnancy
This isn't about meditating your way through anxiety or being told to "just relax." Real nervous system regulation during pregnancy looks like:
Consistent chiropractic care that removes structural interference and supports parasympathetic — rest and digest — function.
Breathwork that activates the vagus nerve, the primary highway of your parasympathetic nervous system. Even five slow breaths, exhale longer than your inhale, signals safety to your body.
Reducing unnecessary sympathetic load — overcommitting, doom-scrolling, skipping meals, running on caffeine and willpower. Your nervous system can't tell the difference between "I'm being chased by a predator" and "I have seventeen unread emails and a baby shower to plan."
Movement that's gentle but consistent. Walking, stretching, prenatal yoga — anything that helps discharge the physical tension your nervous system is holding.
You're Allowed to Want More Than Just "Surviving" This
This isn't about being "well." It's about being whole. And you're allowed to want that — even while pregnant, even while everyone tells you to just rest and let your body do its thing.
Your mission as a woman, a mother, a human being is too important to spend it running on empty for nine months and hoping you bounce back after. You deserve a nervous system that's supported, not just a body that's surviving.
